Eleven years ago, Jay was a 40-year-old owner of a successful business and the father of two young sons.
One afternoon, he noticed some blood in his urine. A visit to the urologist confirmed Jay's worst fear: Stage IV kidney cancer. He was devastated. "Once you're diagnosed with cancer, your life stops. You don't know if you’re going to be alive tomorrow."
Despite Jay's fears, he knew he had to be strong for his sons, who were 11 and 3 years old at the time. Jay is a take-charge, proactive person, so after diagnosis he focused on getting treatment.
Jay called Fox Chase Cancer Center, got an appointment that same day and within two days, he underwent laparoscopic surgery to remove an 8-cm tumor and his left kidney. Jay's cancer had spread to other areas, so he worried about his right kidney being affected; however, his surgeon assured him that his entire kidney bed looked good.
"I immediately felt at home at Fox Chase. The entire staff — from the oncologists, the surgeons, the nurses, the X-ray technicians and the phlebotomists — treats all of their patients like family," said Jay.
At Fox Chase, Jay learned about an experimental cancer drug, which showed a great deal of promise. However, it was only available through clinical trials. Fortunately, Fox Chase Cancer Center was one of the hospitals conducting a clinical trial on the medication. Jay started on the trial and had an immediate response to the drug.
Eleven years later, Jay has no evidence of disease. "Being told that you have no evidence of disease is as close to heaven as you can get. Today, I’m happy. I’m alive. I’m healthy. My cancer is under control."
